Our Work

What’s on your wall? A story as old as lime…

Lime has been used in building for nearly 2000 years and thanks to its malleable properties it has had many incarnations over this time. Two applications of lime plaster (and our favourites) that endure today are marmorino and tadelakt.

Marmorino rose to prominence during the Roman Empire; it was used to adorn ‘inferior’ surfaces in buildings such as brick. Marmorino maintained its prestige for years to come, having a renaissance in 15th century Venice. It was widely employed by architects and artists, as a decorative finish, in churches, palaces and villas across the Veneto region - in many cases as an economic and versatile alternative to marble.

Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed over million of years. Layers of coral, shells and skeletal remains are compressed on the ocean bed by the weight of water.

Kiln

The limestone is heated in a kiln at over 1000 degrees celsius to create quicklime, a white powder. This process absorbs carbon from the atmosphere, helping to offset the energy involved.

Additives

Fine grains are added to the quicklime and these govern the final plaster finish. Grains of sand are added for a matt look and ground marble for a high shine effect.

Pigment Dye

Ground particles of colour are mixed with water and added to the lime powder. This is considered the most eco friendly dying process.

Application

The application process is where the remarkable properties of lime come to life. It can be burnished, textured, polished and embellished to create the desired finish.

Protection

Two coats of beeswax are applied at the final stage to protect the plaster. In addition to providing vital protection the use of beeswax closes this natural process.
